About the role

The Associate will provide legal representation and support in criminal defense matters under the supervision of senior attorneys in a full-time, hybrid role based in Fairfax, VA, with some work from home flexibility. Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting legal research, drafting motions and briefs, reviewing discovery, and preparing case strategies for misdemeanor and felony matters. The Associate will attend court hearings, negotiate with prosecutors, participate in client meetings, and assist with expungement petitions. The role also involves maintaining organized case files, managing deadlines, and collaborating with colleagues to ensure thorough evaluation of defense options. The Associate is expected to uphold high ethical standards, demonstrate strong professional judgment, and contribute to a client-centered practice environment.

Qualifications

  • Strong legal research and writing skills, including the ability to draft motions, briefs, and legal memoranda clearly and persuasively.
  • Experience or interest in criminal law, including familiarity with Virginia criminal procedure, evidence rules, and sentencing considerations.
  • Effective client communication and counseling skills, with the ability to explain legal concepts, manage expectations, and build trust.
  • Courtroom advocacy skills or demonstrated potential, including comfort with oral argument, negotiations with prosecutors, and case presentation.
  • Solid organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple cases, deadlines, and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, including openness to feedback and commitment to team-based case strategy.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to the Virginia Bar (or eligibility and intention to obtain Virginia Bar admission promptly).
  • Prior experience in criminal defense, prosecution, or related litigation through employment, internships, or clinics is highly beneficial.
  • Demonstrated commitment to client-centered advocacy, professional integrity, and maintaining confidentiality.
