Job Title: Attorney / Contractor Associate General Counsel
Location: Nashville, TN - Hybrid
Duration: 12+ Months
The Client is seeking an Attorney to serve as a Contractor Associate General Counsel. The attorney will support the Department's efforts to strengthen Tennessee's rural healthcare infrastructure by providing legal support related to the regulation of healthcare professionals serving residents throughout the state's 89 rural counties.
The position reports to a Deputy General Counsel and will primarily handle disciplinary cases involving healthcare licensees, including investigations, negotiations, administrative proceedings, and trials before licensing boards.
The role also includes opportunities to support special projects and legislative activities, including bill analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent the Tennessee Department of Health in administrative law cases before various health-related licensing boards.
- Review complaints and investigations involving healthcare licensees practicing in Tennessee's rural counties.
- Work with Department investigators and licensing board consultants during investigations and case reviews.
- Provide legal guidance and support to investigators and licensing board consultants.
- Negotiate resolutions with licensees when violations of applicable practice acts are identified.
- Handle disciplinary litigation, including:
- Discovery
- Motion practice
- Administrative hearings
- Trials
- Manage a substantial caseload across different stages of litigation.
- Assist with legislative projects and perform bill analysis as assigned.
- Collaborate effectively with Department staff and legal teams.
- Maintain excellent written and verbal communication.
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree required.
- Admission to the Tennessee Bar required.
- Tennessee Bar license must be in good standing.
- Litigation experience, including trial experience, preferred.
- Ability to manage and prioritize a large volume of work.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical skills and intellectual curiosity.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- At least 1 year of relevant legal experience preferred.

Location & Residency Requirements
- Position is hybrid with weekly in-office work required.
- Work location: 665 Mainstream Drive, Nashville, TN 37243.
- Candidate must be a Tennessee state resident.
- New contractors must establish Tennessee residency before their start date if relocating to Tennessee.
Contract Information
- This is a 37.5-hour/week contract position.
- Position is not eligible for state employee benefits.
- Selected candidate must obtain professional liability insurance before the start date.
- Expenses are allowed.
