About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Construction Controller to join a growing organization in the renewable energy/construction industry.
This person will be a key member of the senior management team and will oversee the company's overall accounting and financial operations. The ideal candidate will have strong construction accounting experience, including Percentage of Completion, WIP reporting, project costing, revenue recognition, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
This is a hands-on leadership position requiring someone who can work independently, improve accounting processes, manage a team, and provide accurate financial information to company leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the company's day-to-day accounting and financial operations.
- Develop, implement, and maintain accounting SOPs, policies, and procedures.
- Prepare monthly and annual financial statements, including:
- Income statements
- Balance sheets
- Cash-flow reports
- Management reports
- Regulatory reports
- Ensure accounting practices comply with GAAP.
- Manage Work in Progress (WIP) reporting and Percentage of Completion accounting.
- Prepare financial forecasts, budgets, and cash-flow projections.
- Manage daily cash flow and banking relationships.
- Oversee Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
- Oversee project billing, contract administration, invoicing, and lien releases.
- Manage project costing and financial tracking.
- Oversee revenue recognition for ongoing projects and services.
- Manage subcontractor accounting and certified payroll requirements.
- Oversee payroll and labor compliance functions.
- Review journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial records.
- Maintain accurate and timely bank, balance sheet, AP/AR, and income-account reconciliations.
- Coordinate internal and external audits.
- Work with external CPAs on tax preparation and financial reporting.
- Assist with sales tax and payroll tax reporting.
- Develop and maintain internal financial controls.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial processes and reduce costs.
- Prepare ad-hoc financial analyses and reports for senior management.
- Maintain and improve accounting systems and reporting processes.
- Assist with financial-system migration and integration projects.
- Hire, train, manage, and develop accounting personnel.
- Provide leadership, direction, and motivation to the accounting team.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 10+ years of accounting experience.
- At least 5 years of Construction Controller experience.
- At least 3 years of Percentage of Completion accounting experience.
- At least 3 years as Controller for a contractor with $30M+ revenue.
- At least 3 years of WIP reporting experience.
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting.
- Experience with GAAP.
- Experience with multiple legal entities, consolidations, and intercompany transactions.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow, and financial-analysis experience.
- Experience with project costing and revenue recognition.
- Strong understanding of AP, AR, payroll, billing, and financial reporting.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lead, train, and motivate accounting staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- MBA.
- CPA.
- Experience in Construction, EPC, Energy, or Renewable Energy industries.
- Experience working in a startup or rapidly growing organization.
- Experience with Sage Intacct.
- Experience managing financial-system implementations or integrations.
- Combination of public accounting and private-industry experience.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is not simply a general accounting Controller. They should have substantial hands-on experience with construction accounting and contractor financial operations.
