Position Overview
We are seeking a Liability Defense Attorney with 3–5 years of experience in general civil litigation, with a focus on property, casualty, and coverage matters. This role offers the opportunity to manage cases from inception through resolution while working closely with experienced litigators and clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent insurance carriers and their insureds in liability defense matters from case inception through resolution
- Draft pleadings, discovery, motions, and legal briefs
- Conduct depositions of plaintiffs, witnesses, and expert professionals
- Prepare for and appear at hearings, mediations, settlement conferences, and trials
- Analyze liability exposure and develop strategic, cost-effective defense approaches
- Collaborate with clients, claims adjusters, and experts to assess risk and case strategy
- Manage an active caseload while ensuring compliance with deadlines and litigation procedures
- Track and manage billable hours in accordance with firm and client guidelines
Qualifications
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- Active license to practice law in Virginia
- 3–5 years of experience in liability insurance defense and civil litigation
- Experience handling depositions, drafting and arguing motions, and working with expert witnesses
- Strong academic credentials and excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management abilities
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Licensure in Washington, D.C. and/or Maryland
- Judicial clerkship or prior prosecutorial experience
Work Environment
- In-person role; candidates must be able to commute to Oakton, VA
