About the Job:
A growing engineering and geospatial services firm is seeking an experienced Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Technician to support utility locating and field investigation projects. This role involves working outdoors, operating utility detection and vacuum excavation equipment, documenting field data, and collaborating with project teams and utility representatives. Candidates should be comfortable traveling, working in varying weather conditions, and performing physically demanding tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret utility plans, maps, and engineering drawings to identify subsurface utilities.
- Operate utility locating and designating equipment to accurately locate and mark underground utilities.
- Operate vacuum excavation equipment to expose and verify underground utilities through test holes.
- Collect field data, create sketches, take photographs, and complete project documentation.
- Prepare accurate field reports and maintain detailed investigation records.
- Coordinate with coworkers, clients, contractors, and utility representatives.
- Participate in quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews.
- Maintain equipment and follow company safety procedures and standards.
Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) or 3+ years in private utility locating.
- Experience locating multiple utility types using a variety of detection tools.
- Familiarity with construction plans, engineering drawings, and utility mapping.
- Experience with surveying, CAD software, or GIS applications is a plus.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn new software systems quickly.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to pass background checks and drug screenings.
- Willingness to travel and work nights or weekends as needed.
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks, including walking long distances and lifting heavy equipment, able to walk equivalent of several miles daily and lift up to 80bls. consistently.
