Tax Manager

Location: Erie, CO | Hybrid | Full-time

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager to lead tax review, workflow, staff management, client relationships, and office operations. This is a leadership-focused role for someone who can take ownership of a tax practice, manage a team, maintain quality standards, and improve processes through technology and automation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day tax office operations, including workflow, tax-season scheduling, and return quality.
  • Review and sign off on tax returns before they are delivered to clients.
  • Prepare and/or review 1040, 1120-S, 1065, and multi-state tax returns.
  • Manage, hire, train, and develop tax staff.
  • Maintain strong relationships with business-owner and high-income individual clients.
  • Handle client questions and resolve tax-related issues.
  • Manage and grow a book of business through client retention and new business development.
  • Establish and improve tax preparation and review processes.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency through AI, automation, and tax technology.
  • Help evaluate and select technology tools for the tax practice.
  • Manage multiple priorities and maintain high-quality work during tax season.
  • Support office budgeting, workflow planning, and overall practice performance.
  • Lead colleagues and team members in a primarily virtual environment.
  • Mentor junior staff and create a collaborative team environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Active CPA or EA in good standing.
  • Strong tax review experience across:
  • Form 1040
  • Form 1120-S
  • Form 1065
  • Multi-state tax returns
  • Strong knowledge of professional tax preparation and review processes.
  • Experience using ATX, UltraTax, or another professional tax software package.
  • Experience managing or supervising tax professionals.
  • Strong client relationship and communication skills.
  • Ability to take ownership of workflow, quality, deadlines, and client outcomes.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a primarily virtual team.
  • Willingness to learn and implement new technology and automation tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing a book of business.
  • Experience in public accounting or a tax/accounting firm.
  • Experience serving business owners and high-income individual clients.
  • Experience with process improvement and tax technology.
  • Strong business development and client retention skills.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid position based in Erie, Colorado.
  • Three days per week in the Erie office, with flexibility around the schedule.
  • Regular collaboration with the local office team and virtual team.
  • Leadership responsibilities during the busy tax season.
